1. Pregnancy and birth starts when a woman’s egg is fertilized by a sperm. This occurs during intercourse when the man ejaculates inside the woman’s vagina. The fertilized egg or the zygote moves into the uterus in 3 to 5 days. While there, it continues to divide becoming a hollow ball of cells.
2. Around 5 to 8 days after the egg lodges itself into the uterus, the egg becomes attached into its lining. This process is referred to as implantation and is usually accomplished within 9 to 10 days after fertilization.
3. Soon after implantation, the zygote becomes known as the embryo which stays under the lining of the uterus on one side. From this point on, the phenomenon of pregnancy and birth becomes more of a reality to the expectant mother.
4. The organs for the embryo begin to form around 3 weeks after fertilization has occurred. This is the time when the embryo elongates  and assumes the human shape. The first to develop are the brain and the spinal cord, the latter of which will be temporarily known as the neural tube. Other major organs like the heart and its accompanying blood vessels will start to be formed around day 17 or 18.
5. At around day 20, the heart will have been developed enough for it to start pumping blood around the embryo’s body. The first batch of red blood cells will then start to appear on the next day while blood vessels will continue to be developed in the placenta.
6. On the 8^th week after fertilization, almost every major organ is completely formed inside the embryo. At this point, he or she will now be called a fetus. At this time, the prospect of pregnancy and birth becomes more apparent not only to the expectant mother but also to the people surrounding her.
7. After the 10^th week of pregnancy, the baby’s structures will have grown and developed completely. Several markers will be apparent at this stage. By 12 weeks, the fetus will begin to fill the entire uterus.
8. On the 14^th week, doctors can identify the baby’s sex and the prospective parents can now start making preparations for a baby girl or a boy.
9. Around the 16^th to 20^th week, the new mother will start feeling the movements of her baby and by week 24 the fetus will have increased its chances of making it outside the mother’s womb.
10. It is important to note that up until delivery, the lungs of the fetus will continue to develop. The same goes for the brain wherein it doesn’t stop to gain new cells until the first year after pregnancy and birth.
